5 Easy Steps to Organizing a Newcomers Group
Step 1: Teacher IntroductionTake a few minutes to tell the students about yourself--your name, interests and hobbies, and where you are from. Be sure to allow time for students to ask questions. This will give you a chance to gain a sense of how well your students can pose questions.Step 2: Student IntroductionsOrganize the students into pairs or small groups and give them 5 to 10 minutes to get to know each other. Students should be encouraged to ask and answer questions, and afterwards they can share with the group what they learned about each other.Step 3: Meeting IntroductionDiscuss the goals with the entire group. Let them know that the meetings are a special time and place for students to learn more about life in the United States. Explain the topics that will be discussed, and encourage them to share their ideas, experiences, and questions openly.Step 4: Establish RulesAs a class, decide on rules that the group will follow so that the meetings can be a place where everyone can learn from one another. You may want to record the rules agreed upon on a poster and display them where everyone can see.Step 5: Distribute JournalsAsk students to write their names in their journals, and explain that these journals are for them to use whenever they like--at school or at home. Students may write and draw about their ideas and experiences, giving them a place to refer back to when they want to recall an idea or concept.
